FedEx prepares for early Christmas rush and 280 million shipment high

With the holiday season just around the corner, FedEx is getting for an early peak in shipping volume.

In fact, the US courier company has forecasted its busiest day to be Monday, 10th December with 19 million shipments being handled by its global network of freight, express and courier staff.

“The continued trend toward record peak volumes is a testament to the strength, speed and reliability of the FedEx Ground and FedEx SmartPost networks,” said Frederick W. Smith, founder and chairman of FedEx.

Compared to the shipping volume generated on 12th December 2012, FedEx expects 2 million more shipments to be moved through the hands of its Christmas staff this year. This would result in a year-on-year increase of 10 percent.

“FedEx team members from around the globe, 300,000 strong, are prepared to help drive commerce during the busy holiday season and beyond”, confirmed Smith.

20,000 additional staff will be hired to help with the increased shipping volume. FedEx hopes to move approximately 280 million shipments between Thanksgiving and Christmas through its network.

Turkish Airlines flies sand tiger sharks to Istanbul

Some people swim with sharks, others fly with them. As much as you may expect this to be a joke, this incident actually happened not long ago on the way to Turkey.

After two weeks of extensive preparations, Turkish Airlines decided to take a risk and fly four sand tiger ragged-tooth sharks to Istanbul's aquarium. Nearly 20 people including aquarium staff and freight experts were involved in ensuring the safe transport of the four juvenile sharks.

The two males and two females swam in four specially-constructed tanks whilst being a few thousand feet up in the sky. Water conditions, feeding schedules as well as the general well-being of the four sharp-toothed passengers had to be monitored at all times.

Visitors can now visit all four sand tiger sharks at Istanbul Aquarium.

UPS - TNT Express mega deal in danger?

The EU Commission, which currently reviews UPS' proposal to buy TNT Express N.L.,  recently published a Statement of Objections (SO).

As the final date in January 2013 comes closer, the EU Commission now announces concerns about maintaining a fair competition amongst Europe's logistics companies. Specific details have not been revealed yet.

However, UPS and TNT Express published a joint press release stating the the received Statement of Objections was "a normal step in a second phase merger procedure".

Moreover, both companies believe that competition amongst European courier companies will be maintained, if not improved. According to TNT Express and UPS, the industry may even get a step closer to the European objective of having a "Digital Single Market". Both, customers and consumer will benefit from an extensive service range, timings and service reliability.

UPS and TNT Express have promised to respond to the SO within the next two weeks.

How much does a next day delivery by courier cost?

Imagine you want to send important business documents to a client, or surprise a friend with a present. Sending a parcel via next day delivery may cost you a slightly more than sending it via a standard service, but it will get your parcel to its destination in less than one working day.

Before you book your collection, you should consider the following factors:

Destination

Most next day courier services will cover domestic deliveries rather than international ones. Depending on where you are sending your parcel to, you may be quoted prices for standard and express services.

Weight and dimensions of your parcel

The weight and dimension of your parcel play a major role in pricing. Non-standard items such as bulky goods or heavy shipments may be restricted to certain services. Make sure to measure your parcel and enter the exact dimensions into the quotation tool in order to avoid surcharges and delays.

Remote area surcharges

Do you know if your receiver lives in remote location? If you are not sure, it is always a good idea to do a remote area check. You may do this during the quotation process. This way you will be shown any additional surcharges as well as availability of certain services. In some cases deliveries on the following working day may not be possible, so better check in advance.

Time of booking

All carrier work by so-called “cut-off times”. Depending on the time of your booking, you will be shown a selection of dates and times. Generally, the earlier during the day you book, the more likely you will be able to arrange a next day delivery. So get in there quick.

Express Services

Big carrier such as UPS and TNT offer various parcel services. If you book UPS Standard Single, your parcel is likely to arrive before 5.30pm on the next working day. TNT Express’ delivery times include deliveries by 9am, 10am and 12pm to name a few.

Unilever and EU commission embark on new sustainability project

Unilever is going to embark on a new project which will see the company introduce new transport management scheme.

The main goal is to reduce carbon emissions and the impact that Unilever's supply chain network has on European roads. Together with the EU Commission, Unilever plans to establish a new transport hub network across the European continent. It will be co-managed by Unilever's main centre operations centre in Katowice, Poland.

"This project is a major step forward in the delivery of Unilever Sustainable Living Plan. Reducing the number of kilometres the number of kilometres that our trucks will need to travel will result in a significant reduction in the environmental impact of our supply chain operations. But the business benefits of this initiative are equally important and they demonstrate, once again, the business case for driving sustainability into our business", said Jan Zijderverld, President of Unilever Europe.

Unilever intends to reduce its carbon emission to the same or even below the ones of 2010 by 2020. The project will also see the annual removal of 154,000 truck voyages from the Brussels-Warsaw route and 260,000 between the cities of Berlin and Brussels.

EU funding will be provided as part of the Marco Polo programme - one of whose main concern is traffic avoidance.
